There's a particular feeling every Taoseño knows: that first morning you step outside and the air actually has a bite to it. The aspens up in the high country are just starting to turn gold, the evenings call for a jacket, and somewhere in the back of your closet, your sweaters are waiting. Before you reach for that favorite flannel or wool pullover, though, it's worth taking a few minutes to think about how you're bringing your fall wardrobe back into rotation. Clothes that sat folded away all summer need a little care to look and feel their best, and a few smart habits now will help them last through many more Taos winters.
1. Give everything a fresh cleaning before wearing. Even if a sweater looks clean, fabric that's been stored for months can pick up a musty smell or fine dust. A gentle wash (or a trip to see us) before the first wear makes a real difference. Give your wools a close look too. Moths love them, and it's better to find a hole now than on your first cold morning.
2. Know your fabric before you wash it. Wools (merino, angora, cashmere and the like) generally do best with cold water, a gentle cycle and mild detergent, or with hand-washing. Cotton flannels and denim jackets can usually handle a normal cycle, but check the care label on anything with leather trim, down fill or embellishments, since those often need special handling. Our retail shelf carries gentle detergents made for exactly this — Wool Wash and Wool Rinse from Unicorn Fibre Products, and Mama Suds Delicate Linen Wash, with more options in store.
3. Skip the dryer for knitwear. High heat is one of the fastest ways to shrink or misshape a favorite sweater. Instead, lay knits flat on a clean towel to air dry, gently reshaping them while damp. It takes longer than the dryer, but it's the difference between a sweater that lasts one season and one that lasts a decade.
4. Treat stains before they set. Fall often means green chile roasting season, bonfires and muddy trailheads. That's all wonderful for Taos life and less wonderful for light-colored sweaters. Blot (never rub) fresh stains and treat them right away. Keep stained pieces out of the dryer until the stain is gone, because heat can set it for good.
5. Let your winter coats and heavier layers get a professional clean. Down jackets, wool coats and anything with structure or insulation benefit from professional cleaning at the start of the season. Our process keeps the fill lofted and the fabric looking sharp, and it's kind to both your clothes and Taos. Your coat will be ready to grab on the coldest morning without a second thought.
Fall in Taos moves fast. One week it's still warm enough for a t-shirt, and the next you're digging out gloves. Getting your wardrobe ready now means fewer surprises later. If you'd rather skip the guesswork on wool, down or anything delicate, bring it by Clean Taos. We're happy to take the fuss out of the seasonal change so you can spend more time enjoying it.
